Bash the Trash (BTT) brings a musical message of science and sustainability with weird and wonderful instruments created from trash. Grammy-nominated BTT is the brainchild of long-time Hastings residents John Bertles and Carina Piaggio. This year we present “BTT Undrummed”, a dubious selection of tunes from the Bash the Trash Songbook, played super-informally bluegrass-style by an all-Hastings crew on our tiny front porch.

Exit 12 is an eclectic jazz quintet based in Hastings on Hudson: Glenn Babakian plays trombone in jazz and classical venues. David Hamburger’s played bass and toured with NYC rock bands throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. Mark Kaufman plays jazz, R&B and Jewish music on saxophones, clarinet and bass clarinet. Bill Reeve has played drums with many of the great names in jazz. Sometimes raucous, often joyful, always new.

Kaya Nicole is a vocalist, guitarist and composer originally from New York City. Old Dogs New Tricks is husband-and-husband duo Mark Davis and James Howe, with flutist Paul Harris. Their songs ask what it means to be human and how, in the words of the poet Mary Oliver, we can make the most of our “one wild and precious life.” Forming Old Dogs New Tricks is one answer they came up with for themselves. ODNT has performed locally, in New England and in New York City. Their album, “When It Goes,” was released in March 2020. They are currently recording their second album.

Richard Brooker’s deft touch on guitar and mandolin comes from decades of playing in American, Celtic and gypsy jazz traditions. Tom Heany is a Hudson Valley songwriter; his instruction manual is the great American song book and his newspaper is traditional American music. They sing like fine old cars.

Yvonne Sotomayor is a bilingual poet who has toured 27 States and Canada, played the Iowa and Kentucky State Fairs, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and The New York City Marathon. Recordings from her first EP, Radical Chica, have aired the world over and her poetry videos have appealed to viewers across genres and generations. She has also produced a Neil deGrasse Tyson special for CUNY TV, appeared in NYPD Blue, and worked with Whoopi Goldberg, Gérard Depardieu, Bill Murray and Alec Baldwin.
